Wendt Lecture

"The Future of Democracy and Habits of the Heart: Renewing America from the Bottom Up"

Speaker: Parker J. Palmer
Date: Tuesday, March 23, 3010
Time: 7:00 - 8:45 p.m.
Where: McCormick Gymnasium (located in Stoltz Sports Center in the University of Dubuque Campus)

Parker J. Palmer will explore the need for us to form character or "habits of the heart" together as a pre-requisite for creating a civic community. Without this he argues our society drifts away from the kind of citizenship needed for a healthy democracy into the kind of circumstances America faces today. Dr. Palmer challenges us to pick up our responsibility as citizens and re-engage in creating civic community in our schools, colleges and churches.

Dr. Palmer is founder and senior partner of the National Center for Courage & Renewal which oversees programs for people in education, medicine, ministry, law and philanthropy. For fifteen years, he served as Senior Associate of the American Association of Higher Education and now serves as Senior Advisor to the Fetzer Institute. A writer, traveling teacher and activist, Dr. Palmer focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change.
