Spring 2013 National Choir Tour

Dr. Charles Barland, Choir Director
Fine and Performing Arts Department Head
Associate Professor of Music

For the past 11 years, the University of Dubuque Concert Choir and Chamber Singers have performed throughout the United States, sharing their talents in performance and learning about the rich history and cultural diversity of the United States.

In May 2013, the choir toured Hawaii, offering six performances on two islands. Starting on the Big Island, also named Hawaii, the choir performed at the Church of the Holy Cross in Hilo and Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in Kailua-Kona. Because these two cities are located on opposite sides of the Big Island, the students were able to travel in a rough circle around the entire island. During the two days on the Big Island, the choir enjoyed visiting Hapuna Beach State Park, Akaka Falls State Park, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, and Pu’uhonua National Historical Park (Place of Refuge).

Following our visit to the Big Island, the choir traveled to the island of Oahu. Performances on Oahu included United Church of Christ in Honolulu, Lili’uokanlani Protestant Church in Haleiwa, Mililani Presbyterian Church in Mililani, and Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church, Honolulu. There were many exceptional opportunities to learn through visits to Pali Lookout, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head State Park, Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific (Memorial Day Ceremony), and Iolani Palace.
