Margaret Farrington (C’49) Pays It Forward

We’ve all heard the news stories about going through the drive-through and finding out at the window that the car ahead of you paid your debt. Wow, what a difference that makes in your day. Often times, that motivates you to do the same for the car behind you. In fact, just recently, customers at the Heav’nly Donuts restaurant in Amesbury, Massachusetts were feeling motivated to "pay it forward” when 55 drive-through guests paid for the driver behind them. Not quite so recently, a Tim Hortons (coffee and donut restaurant) in Canada had a giving-back chain of 228 orders. Those "pay it forward” moments have a great impact on both givers and receivers.

At the University of Dubuque, we have thousands of alumni and friends who make a commitment to the University of Dubuque in order to "pay it forward”. Margaret Farrington (C’49) is a shining example of such an alumna. As an early graduate of the University of Dubuque, Margaret always "paid it forward” in whichever way she could. Often times, it was a gift of $20 or $25 to the Annual Fund and as she grew in her career, her gifts to the University grew.

In 1993, Margaret joined the University of Dubuque Heritage Society which recognizes those who have included UD in their estate plans.

In response to her induction she wrote a letter to the President of the University that offered these great words, "The little I do or will do for the University is a very small repayment of all that they have done for me and all who have graduated from the school. I will never be able to repay that debt.” This is a message that the University of Dubuque fully embraces.

Margaret passed away on July 30, 2013. Her estate outlined a donation to the University of Dubuque endowment. Her foresight led to the great decision to pay it forward to the current and future generations of Spartans. She was a wonderful alumna and friend to the University of Dubuque. In honor of Margaret, we invite you to pay it forward and make a gift to the Annual Fund. For all of those that pay it forward to the University of Dubuque, thank you for believing!
