Alan Garfield Brings Art Opportunities to Alumni

"Come Home to the Arts” is the theme for Homecoming 2013. The theme is woven through the schedule for the weekend. The art emphasis begins with a student performance at the Heritage Society dinner on Thursday, October 10th. While Homecoming officially ends at the dedication of the new Heritage Center, the art emphasis on campus and for alumni will surely continue.

One particular individual at the University of Dubuque has played an integral role in introducing and teaching students about art both in and out of the classroom. Now, this professor provides opportunities for alumni to engage in the arts at the University of Dubuque.

Professor Alan Garfield has been a faculty member at the University of Dubuque since August 1999, where he has also serves as Chair of the Computer Graphics and Interactive Media Department. He has taught thousands of students general education classes on the broad topic of art and has taught high level graphics courses and much more to students in the CGIM major.

Garfield is also well known on campus for art and culture trips abroad. In fact, two upcoming student trips are also available to alumni: the Art & Culture of France, Belgium and The Netherlands (Saturday, November 23-Saturday, November 30) and Art & Culture of England (Tuesday, January 14-Wednesday, January 22). The Advancement/Alumni Office is currently exploring additional art and culture trips abroad under Garfield’s leadership. Contact the Advancement Office to learn more.

Garfield has also been named the Director of the Bisignano Art Gallery in the University’s new Heritage Center. The next gallery exhibit for the Bisignano Art Gallery is an Alumni Art Show. This collection will feature works of art from UD alumni. Many works being submitted are from alumni who have hobbies and passions for photography, drawing, painting and maybe even sculpting. If you have an interest in displaying your art hobbies or passions with your friends at the University of Dubuque, please let us know!

Garfield continues to play an important role in the lives of students both in and out of the classroom. We are excited to partner with Alan on future art and culture opportunities in Spartan Nation!
